There are practical repercussions, certainly, but it's not as if there aren't benefits to Synth Ascension as well. So, what we have to start with is that there is no innate value placed on a species being connected to the Shroud or not. What we have here is an extreme case of subjective evaluation being applied like it's an objective evaluation. What do you think of it? What the synthetic ascension actually means? How the fallen empires and even the contingency see an ascended population? How ascended synths are different from factory built synths with personality matrix that have the memories of an extinct people? An ascended synth empire isn't even- lore wise- as efficient as machine empires which have no individuality and don't pretend to be or try to behave like organics. By the flavor texts, the synthetic ascension just meant that your population uploaded their data into synthetic bodies, thus making copies of themselves, replicating themselves forever without any change or evolution, making them no different from the awoken species that the player can find in the galaxy and can also upload to synthetic bodies or even from synths with personality matrix produced in a factory. The shroud, psionic entities and energies, telepathy, metaphysical realities, these are all true in the Stellaris universe, they even have military applications, and an ascended synth empire is unable to research any of it, they clearly lost something in the way. Mechanically, inside the game, the synthetic ascension is pretty powerful and makes your empire very productive, but lore wise, when the spiritualist empires warn you that now you are now just a metal husk with no soul, they are right, no?
I suppose this was discussed already, but I really wanted to know people opinions about this.
